About the Role

Our public sector client is seeking up to ten (10) Senior Front End Designer(s) for a 1-year full time contract, with the possibility of up to a 24-month extension. The Front End Designer(s) will be required on a full-time basis (7.25 hour work day, 36.25 hours/week), to work on service innovation, program review and digital transformation projects across the Client’s departments; working across two (2) to three (3) projects. Time, location and frequency of work will vary depending on the needs of the particular project. However, a Front End Designer may be required to work fewer or more hours depending on the nature and needs of their work, as directed by the Client.



The Front End Designer(s) will work as part of cross-functional program review or product delivery teams and work collaboratively and collectively participate in a full range of activities including: field research, backlog definition and refinement, and sprint planning and execution. Digital transformation projects review the current state of services, identify future opportunities, and then deliver new services that are efficient, effective and affordable.
 


From research and findings, the Front End Designer(s) will develop design documentation, including for interfaces.




Responsibilities will include:



Services and project deliverables should evolve as the work progresses, in response to emerging user and business needs, as well as design and technical opportunities. However, the following must be delivered (iteratively) over the course of the project:



• Creative, evidence-based front-end design solutions for digital service delivery. Solutions must be aligned with corporate design methods and standards.
• Foundational design of artifacts on a variety of platforms and fidelities, such as prototypes and wireframes, design pattern libraries and components, graphic design style guides, and fully documented build-ready design specifications.
• Plans for design research components.
• Justifiable recommendations for design decisions to ensure alignment of project teams, program areas, and senior management.
• Participation in agile project management processes and ceremonies such as sprint planning, sprint review, demos, and retrospectives.
• Usability test plans and reports evaluating the effectiveness of current and future designs.
• Analysis and recommendations on design accessibility to ensure compliance with applicable standards.
 


The Client and the Contractor shall determine changes to Services and Materials as required. The Client and the Contractor will determine changes to Services and Materials through the Artifacts.




Working Hours



Standard Hours of work are 08:15 – 16:30 Alberta time, Monday through Friday excluding holidays observed by the client, and will be expected to be on-call periodically. Work must be done from within Canada, due to network and data security issues.



It is anticipated the role will be primarily remote, however in the event of an onsite meeting, the Client/Handis Consulting Ltd. does not pay for travel to attend on-site meetings (on reasonable notice), nor any expenses related to relocation, travel, accommodations, or meals. However, the Front End Designer is expected to attend meetings or work sessions often (i.e. quarterly) in Alberta on reasonable notice from the Client. The Client reserves the right to alter this work arrangement on reasonable notice to the Front End Designer(s).




Equipment



The Front End Designer(s) shall be responsible for providing all their own equipment. The computer's operating system must be a modern version of Windows or MacOS that is compatible with Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) and related software for remote access. Windows is preferred due to better compatibility. AVD/remote-related software will be installed on the resource's computer.

Requirements

Other Mandatory


  • A personal portfolio of work of the proposed resource must be provided. The portfolio must include work samples with brief annotations explaining the work. A link to an online portfolio will not be considered.

 

Work Experience


  • 2 years experience as a Front End Designer designing and enhancing services via web and other channels

  • 2 years experience developing UX artifacts, including streamlined scenarios, storyboards, wireframes, flows and interactive prototypes

  • 2 years experience working within a cross-functional product team in an Agile environment

  • 2 years experience building and maintaining component libraries/design systems

  • 2 years experience exploring multiple design solutions to a given problem or feature, and communicating those solutions visually through sketches, user flows, wireframes, functional prototypes, and/or high-fidelity designs, as necessary

  • 2 years experience in production design for multiple digital devices (web, mobile, etc.) or complex enterprise applications

  • 2 years experience using accessibility standards and principles including the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines

  • 2 years experience with current methodologies and design thinking, especially in relation to improving service experience

  • 2 years experience with frontend design applications such as Axure, Adobe XD, Sketch, Figma, etc.

  • 2 years experience working as a Front End Designer on a project comparable in size and complexity to the service innovation, program review, and/or digital transformation projects in an Enterprise environment

  • 2 years experience working in a dedicated public sector central digital office (e.g. UK Government Digital Service; Ontario Digital Service; British Columbia Government Digital Experience, Government of Alberta Digital Innovation Office or its successors)

 


Standard Security Clearance and Potential Enhanced Security Clearance


The contractor shall, prior to commencement of the Services, provide the client, on its request and at no cost to the client/Handis Consulting Ltd., with a current criminal record check.


Should a Front End Designer(s) be assigned to a team working requiring further Clearance, prior to performing Services, the Front End Designer(s) must provide the Client with an “Enhanced Security Clearance”, ensure eligibility.  Front End Designer(s) should be aware that over the course of the SOW, Front End Designer(s) may be required to complete higher-level security clearances, such as the “Royal Canadian Mounted Police Top Secret Clearance.” Please ensure applicants are eligible to apply if required.

Three references, for whom similar work has been performed, must be provided. The most recent reference should be listed first. Reference checks may or may not be completed to assist with scoring of the proposed resource by the client.
